DAY 2: Rain, rain and more rain.

It has been raining in my part of Jamaica non-stop for three days. That is never good news because as much as we love the fact that a river runs through our district it also means that when we have torrential rains there is increased risk of flooding. I am sharing some of the pictures that I have been receiving from home. Please keep Maggotty and other parts of Jamaica in your prayers.

Jamaica's Bloody Democracy

I like this article by Professor Patterson that examines the connection between politics and crime and violence in Jamaica ORLANDO PATTERSON Cambridge, Mass. THE violence tearing apart Jamaica, a democratic state, raises serious questions not only about its government’s capacity to provide basic security but, more broadly and disturbingly, the link between violence and democracy itself. The specific causes of the turmoil are well known. For decades political leaders have used armed local gangs to mobilize voters in their constituencies; the gangs are rewarded with the spoils of power, in particular housing and employment contracts they can dole out. Opposition leaders counter with their own gangs, resulting in chronic violence during election seasons. These gangs eventually moved into international drug trafficking, with their leaders, called “dons,” becoming ever more powerful. It has been over 2 years.

I started this blog when I went on "maternity leave" and I basically abandoned it when the reality of baby and not enough time in the day hit. I am back. A lot has changed in the past couple of years but the one thing that endures is my love for Jamaica and my pangs of nostalgia ever so often. Jamaica has gone through a lot since 2008 and I have a lot of catching up to do. In addition to motherhood, I also discovered Facebook and that became an outlet for sharing news and discussing issues in short snippets. I was delighted today when I received a notification from Blogger of their new feature that allows me to incorporate the social media in my blog and vice versa. So here is a relaunch. I will try to keep up as I reach out to all Jamaicans. I hope that you will also reach out to me with your comments and views. ~Peace~
