LEST WE FORGET!

Tivoli Gardens- 1 Year Later JAMAICA GLEANER, MAY 2011 Let us not forget the pain we felt as we feared the worse for our country and the people most affected.  It was almost a year ago when the eyes of the world was on Jamaica. The Jamaica Gleaner reports on Tivoli Gardens, 1 year later. I have posted the videos below. Can you remember where you were and what you were doing when the news broke? PART I PART II PART III

Penis/Power

PENIS/POWER   What could Woods, Edwards, Kahn and Schwarzeneger (to name a few) tell us about penises and power? That as long as a man has a penis and some power, he is likely to cheat on his spouse. It also tells us that penises like swords are often wielded as weapons in acts of violence against women. This view appears narrow but for many women, it is a thought that crosses our minds whenever we hear of cases like this, especially if you are a woman who has been cheated on. I am sickened by the two cases (so far) this week of powerful men who have raped, fathered a child outside of marriage and disrespected their wives in a way no woman ever wants to be disrespected. Powerful men and their out of control penises pisses me off. What gives them the right to rape and cheat? Last week I was most pissed as I read the American Journal of Public Health report that stated 1,152 women in the DR Congo are raped daily. That is 48 women raped every hour- how, why, how dare you? I believe

Small Farmer's Role in Alleviating Hunger and Poverty

My 2 cents: the farmers market initiative in Jamaica is a great example of how Governments support small farmers. The Government of Jamaica / MoA should explore how they can team with the Gates Foundation to further promote small farming. ------------------------------------------------------------ "We know that smart investments in farming families help them become self-sufficient. We know that increasing productivity while preserving the environment leads to higher incomes and better lives over the long-term. But governments are not living up to their pledges to provide this kind of support to small farmers" Read more at:  http://www.gatesfoundation.org/foundationnotes/Pages/bill-gates-110506-small-farmers.aspx Sent from Christine's iPhone 4. Parenting & Culture Part II

Balancing Motherhood While Preserving the Jamaican  Culture- Part II By T.D. Bailey   As a mother, I am often  disappointed with  Jamaican parents   living abroad who have raised their children  to not embrace the  richness of the Jamaican c ulture  What a disservice is b eing  done. Our Jamaican culture is  unique on many levels  and should be shared with our o ff springs.  I am of the belief  that many Jamaican parents who have sheltered their children from their culture do so because they don't fully understand it, fear it, or may have a dislike of it. I am proud to say, there is nothing happening in Jamaica that I have not experienced in the United States or heard about happening.  I will not let fear, lack of knowledge or misunderstanding drive me from this culture.  My daughter has a greater appreciation for the things she has and the way she relates to people.  She has seen economic hardship in certain areas in JA we have visited, but she has also seen how much love and ha

Parenting & Culture

I have known my friend Mz. Bailey for over eight years and I have always admired and respected her as a mother. I am happy that she has agreed to write a few articles for my blog. This is the first in a two part article on parenting and culture.  Your comments are welcome. Thank you gurl xoxo.  Balancing Motherhood While Preserving the Jamaican  Culture- Part I By T.D. Bailey On May 19,  1998, my little girl Tifani graced us with her presence on this earth. S he was 7lbs and measured 19 1/4 inches.  She was a beautiful and looked like a P orcelain  doll.  I was overjoyed and the moment she turned  8 - months  old , I planned our first trip to my homeland -Jamaica . I recall telling my family we were coming down and  was getting all the items I needed packed.  I thought,  ' ok, I will bring her formula, juices and a few  snacks. '  As I journeyed to Miami International I will filled with excitement and anxiousness. Tifani was so happy, it was  as if  she knew she was abo

YOU SPICE UP MY LIFE!

UPDATE: I now have a chocolate habanero plant and I must admit that it is very very HOT! NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP! My recent Lenten sacrifice had me thinking about the things that I would and would not give up for any period of time. I mentioned chocolate in my previous post, the other would be hot peppers, raw, not processed, just sliced and devoured. At least 1-2 fruits a day, on everything. Yes, I love my peppers and Scotch Bonnets are my favorites. We had one plant that perished in the cold spell, so for a few months we have been searching.A few days ago, the hubster (HB) called me excited "I found a scotch bonnet plant, the person says I must come and get it now because it is the last one he has left". Knowing HB he must get that last one, and he did. He arrived home holding it up like a trophy he had just won. Proud and happy. Eager to plant. While we were picking the fruit we noticed the nursery label, a place not far away, I googled, emailed and called and they ha
