Going to the beach was fun but snorting saltwater was extremely painful. Little did I know that what she really was making me do is cleanse the passages of my sinus to limit infection and also allow me to breathe freely. As I got older and moved away from home I abandoned these "archaic" methods and illness came easy. I would have frequent allergies, asthma attacks and sinus infections, I ran the gamut with all the antibiotics and steroid medications on the market.

About 2 1/2 years ago I grew increasingly sick and tired of being sick and tired and started researching alternatives to the Dr's. medications. I
invested in the alternative medicine/ natural health literature and even considered becoming a naturopathic practitioner. In my readings I came across the idea of cleansing the sunuses with a saline solution. Suddenly I was flooded with the memory of my mom handing me a glass with salt water and instructing me to snort then blow. The difference here was that the pain of snorting was removed and a mechanism was available that would introduce the solution into my nostrils in a safe and less painful way. Enter the "nose bidet" or "neti pot".

I rushed to CVS and found a product called "Sinucleanse" the package include a a netipot along with some solution. This teapot like devise is inserted in one nostril fills up the sinuses and rinses it with the waste coming out the other nostril. The first time I tried it it took a while for the water to start flowing out the other side and when it did the flow was slow. I used it everyday for a week and realised that by the end of the week my sinuses filled up quickly and flowed out the other side in volumes. I suspect there was blockage at first but now the blockage was removed. The folllowing week I came off my daily dose of allergy medication and became a "neti addict". I used the neti pot daily and learnt to mix my own solution. I have not had a head cold, allergies, asthma attack or the much hated sinus infection in almost 2 years.

Today I use the neti pot maybe 2 0r 3 times a week . If I am in an environment where there is smoke or lots of dust I will wash my sinuses as a preventative measure. If I am congested or there are people around me who are sick I may wash up to 3 times a day. I have told every sniffing person I meet about this product and most recently was delighted when Dr. Oz revamped this old Indian tradition on the Oprah show.

MY SOLUTION: 1 tsp. sea salt, pinch of baking soda dissolved in 16ozs. of warm water. I usually dissolve in a cup and refill my neti pot until the solution is done.

I often wonder where my mother could have gained such a knowledge. According to the wikipedia online encyclopedia:
Nasal irrigation is an ancient Ayurvedic technique known as Jala neti, which literally means nasal cleansing with water in Sanskrit, where the practitioner uses a neti pot to perform the irrigation. Jala neti, though relatively less known in Western culture, is a common practice in parts of India and other areas in South East Asia, performed as routinely as brushing one's teeth using a toothbrush. It is performed daily, usually as the first thing in the morning with other cleansing practices. It may also be permed at the end of the day if one works or lives in a dusty or polluted environment. When dealing with problems of congestion it can be performed up to four times a day.

My mother grew up with her East Indian grandmother so I guess this is where she may have learnt about it. Whatever the origin of her knowledge I truly appreciate that I was introduced to this safe and side effect free way of handling multiple health problems.

Traditional Jamaican Medicines- The Guinea-Hen Weed

UPDATED: October 24, 2015-  My Testimony  Last year I decided that for my 40 something birthday I would gift myself a mammogram. It was my first time and it was an uncomfortable experience. A couple of days after the screening I received a call from the Dr., she told me that there was a small spot on my breast that they will need to a second mammogram to determine what it could be. She assured me that it could be nothing and I should not panic. Well, I was concerned and decided that for the next 7 days to the 2nd appointment I would take a shot glass full of the Guinea hen weed (GHW) that I have been soaking in a corner for a few months. My mother had set the bottle up for me but I never really paid it much attention. I knew what people said GHW was good for and if there was ever a time to "test" it that time was now. After a week of GHW consumption I returned to the clinic for my follow up appointment. Needless to say, the results came back clean. I know there were many p...

Delicious Bitterness!

Cooking with Bitter Melon ( Momordica Charantia) One of my favorite TV show is the Food Network's "Chopped". The basket intrigues me and the chefs' response to a challenging basket and a ticking clock is nothing short of dramatic. On one episode the chefs were challenged with the Bitter Melon, an ingredient I grew up knowing as "Foo Gaw". The Bitter Melon is from the same family as the Jamaican herbal tea Cerasee and has an equally acerbic taste as the dreaded tea that we would have to drink whenever we had a bellyache or needed some form of "washout".  Anyway, back to "Chopped", the Bitter Melon bowled over a few of the chefs who had no idea how to cook it. One chef just sliced it up and put it in a salad, I felt sorry for the judges who would have to taste that because I am all too familiar with its taste. Needless to say, that episode brought back memories of my father and his love for the bitter melon and how much that influence...

What to do with all those HOT Peppers!

My love affair with hot peppers is no secret. I have written about it and I have been subject to many "cuss off" because I use too much when I cook. Recently, we acquired the Chocolate Scotch Bonnet plant and the tree has been bearing out of control. Below is my mostly unedited video on how to quickly use excess hot peppers. Below is my original blog post about my lover. ENJOY and your comments are welcome. UPDATE: I now have a chocolate habanero plant and I must admit that it is very very HOT! NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP! Yes, I love my peppers and Scotch Bonnets are my favorites. We had one plant that perished in the cold spell, so for a few...
